TWO ENGINES HOME
A bomber out of 1944. A voice on the radio. Ninety-one seconds to close every door in time.
Air traffic controller Nora Blake is working a quiet midnight shift at Piedmont Triad International when a World War II bomber calls her on the emergency frequency. Lucky Lady, a B-17 with two engines dead and a bomb hung in her belly, has flown out of 1944 and into the North Carolina rain.
Nora talks the pilot, Lieutenant Tom Harlan of Hays, Kansas, down onto runway five left. By morning there are mastodons on Interstate 40.
Under the farmland beside the airport, the government has built the Carolina Ring, the biggest particle accelerator on earth, and every time it fires it tears a hole in time. People from other years keep appearing on Nora’s radar: a family from 1962, a barnstormer and his wing-walker, a Red Tail fighter pilot, a girl from 2089. Colonel Dale Fisk wants them locked in rooms with no windows. Nora and Tom want to get them home.
Then the girl from 2089 tells them what happens on August 27. The Ring will fire at full power and open every door at once. Only one thing can break it: a B-17 on two engines, with no radar, and the one bomb still in her bay. Tom’s own door home will be open that same morning.
A love story, a mystery, and a thriller about a man out of time and the woman who wouldn’t stop talking him home.
